"Not Just K-pop" by Ava Park
K-pop is an internationally recognized music genre, and its popularity is largely attributed to iconic groups like BTS, alongside trailblazers such as BigBang and Blackpink. While celebrating K-pop’s role in thrusting Korea onto the global stage and its widespread appeal, there is a sense of disappointment that other genres of Korean music remain overshadowed.
Despite K-pop’s dominance, numerous lesser-known Korean artists explore diverse genres like R&B, rock, and indie music. Unfortunately, these talents often go unnoticed, as the limelight tends to favor artists affiliated with major K-pop companies such as YG, Hybe, SM, and JYP.
However, noteworthy exceptions exist with artists like The BlackSkirts, Se So Neon, and Wave to Earth, as they make their own mark internationally. Their music finds resonance on social media - most importantly on TIkTok, with Wave to Earth gaining particular attention for viral tracks like “bad”, “seasons,” and “love.” This group stands out especially not only for their catchy tunes but also for breaking away from the conventional norms of the K-pop industry, offering listeners a refreshing experience.
As K-pop continues to evolve, some fans discover a shift towards “noise music”, prompting said fans into the exploration into diverse Korean music genres. The future appears promising for different Korean music styles, as an increasing number of individuals seek varied musical experiences. Underground artists, often overlooked, possess the potential to satisfy this growing appetite for diversity.
While some audiences may prefer sticking to their favorite K-pop groups, it is hoped that, with time, non-pop groups will garner equal respect. The recognition of a broader spectrum of Korean music beyond the mainstream is essential for fostering a more inclusive and diverse musical landscape.
